Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

A friend in Japan sent me the following in late 2006, which views the death of a family pet differently than we do in Western cultures --

Pets are a part of our household in Japan, and currently we've got a dog (faithful old Sakura) and two cats (black-and-white Mix-chan and all-black Kuro). My wife once remarked to me,

"It's important to keep pets in the home. They die in place of family members when the family runs into bad luck."

My eyes become little black points like an anime character's at this, as I struggled to understand her statement. She was talking about the concept of migawari (me-gah-wah-ree), literally meaning substitute for or sacrifice for.

When our dog Chibi died earlier this year, the general consensus among my Japanese family was that he had died in order to protect someone in the family from injury or worse, and everyone loved him a little more for that. Originally a ninja term meaning to dress up a tree to look like a person so an enemy would think it was you and attack it mistakenly, the word refers to anything that takes bad luck in your place, protecting you as it does so. There are many kinds of objects believed to serve as lightning rods for bad fortune, including various types of omamori good luck charms or Buddhist statues ...

thus the sadness and trauma which we experience at the loss of a pet is thus transformed into a loving thankfulness for having selflessly given its life to spare the life of someone in the household who cared for, loved and nurtured the pet.

If any of my readers would like to post a memorial tribute to their beloved pet of any kind, send me a small photo [in jpeg / jpg format] and brief description of your pet [similar to those shown below] and I will include it on this page for a period of two weeks without charge. Those who might prefer their tribute to remain on this page for a year, can do so at a nominal cost of $25.00US or 25 Euros / year.
