11 September 2001 World Trade center

Years ago, when Evelio was alive, we frequently went to New York City, always to areas close to the World Trade Center. My last trip there was on 18 August 2001, just a couple weeks ago.

Since this tragedy I have received a phone call from a friend in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), emails from family in Poland, and even my eBay winning bidders from as far away as India -- asking how I was and how/if the tragedy affected me.

I emailed friends I know who live or work in New York, asking them if they are OK. One of them, Jim, sent me the following reply --

Fortunately I missed my bus and was not in the city when the planes struck
the towers. Our bus was just outside of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel when
this went down. I was able to see the Trade Center, we saw the 1st
building, which appeared to be on fire and we saw the impact of the 2nd
plane, but from our angle we didn't see the plan itself.

Papers from the offices floated into Brooklyn, it appeared to be like a
ticker-tape parade although I could see that much of the paper was charred.

Joy was home on disability, she is pregnant and is suffering from
hyperemesis. She was stressed out since she knows that I'm usually in by
that time. My cel phone didn't work until around 11:00.

My office building isn't in the immediate area, its about a 5 minute walk
away, but the debris pretty much covered all of lower Manhattan after the
collapses. The whole thing is completely surreal. I'm glad that I wasn't
able to be up close and personal; it would have been much more disturbing.
At this point I don't know of anyone personally that was trapped, but it is
still early yet.

Amaury, whom I have mentioned several times in my YES section, was online on the 12th -- I did NOT know where he lives or works, and was glad to see his screen name pop up on my aol Instant Message buddy list. So I IM-ed him, and the following is the transcript of our conversation (his screen name has been altered) --

MyMASTODON: I see you are still alive!

MyMASTODON: good going

Amaury: I was there when we got hit- it felt like an earthquake. I work on the 28th floor so i was getting out while the 2nd one got hit. it was very scary i think i'm still like in some dream.

MyMASTODON: OMG
you were in that building?

Amaury: I saw all these firemen going up while we were going down these stairs that were jammed with people so i know all those guys i saw going up are dead as are i'm sure all those people still waiting to get out.

MyMASTODON: holy shit
at least you are still with us

Amaury: i feel weird

Amaury: my legs hurt from running

MyMASTODON: i guess
I feel weird and I wasn't there

MyMASTODON: are your pals ok?

Amaury: yes a lot of empire got out but i know there's some missing

Amaury: i think those that stayed thinking it was ok-- are probably dead

MyMASTODON: what I don't see is how something like this could happen

Amaury: and yet it seem so easy

MyMASTODON: wish it were as easy to go over and liquidate bin Ladin and gang

Amaury: its against the law to have any flights near major cities in europe

Amaury: here i'v gone over the math. many times thinking if it feel thousands could be gone

Amaury: in an airplane that is

MyMASTODON: but nobody has artillary near cities except in less democratic countries

MyMASTODON: it could happen in any country

Amaury: yes but there can be laws against flying over cities or have designated paths- such that one can see when theres aberration now?

MyMASTODON: seeing doesn't STOP it though

Amaury: its true again this thing was easy

MyMASTODON: the planes were NOT in the normal flight path

Amaury: and it can happen again even by accident any airplane over manhattan

MyMASTODON: yeah, that's always been a problem at any airport

MyMASTODON: maybe we need floating airports over the ocean

Amaury: again there has to be this thought going forward

MyMASTODON: so what happens with your work -- any news?

Amaury: even a single engine cessna could do a lot of damage in nyc

Amaury: no news-- the whole headquarters were there so my vp is off to albany== i might have to go there to setup broadcasting shop

MyMASTODON: hey, some financial center is operating out of the guys townhouse

MyMASTODON: they had a lot of floors in one of the building

Amaury: and yes when you think about it they will need artillery if they want to possibly prevent some but from slamming into times square with their plane

Amaury: "some guy"

MyMASTODON: one of the heads of the company

Amaury: think of all that work i did these last two years setting up that department!!!!

Amaury: its all gone-- gotta start again!

MyMASTODON: hey, it ain't gone -- just moved -- assuming there is the proverbial backup

Amaury: a lot of servers where there!

Amaury: were there

Amaury: they all fell down

MyMASTODON: damn -- and NO other backup? That was dumb

Amaury: no they have essential medical information backup in staten island

Amaury: daily so

Amaury: but my stuff is not-- its video company stuff

MyMASTODON: they might think of having complete backup at some less vulnerable location in the future

MyMASTODON: you didn't keep anything on your home computer?

Amaury: again al the biz is running it is backup in staten island

Amaury: its all the anciallry stuff that

Amaury: some programs i kept also some guy i had just hired took a cd of some work we just finished

MyMASTODON: kewl
then all is not lost

Amaury: i didnt think it would fall!!!!

MyMASTODON: guess they will have to take emergencies like this into consideration in the future

MyMASTODON: NOBODY knows this stuff -- all they can do is be prepared for really weird events

Amaury: supposedly there's all this financial papers all over the place in wall street

Amaury: like private accounts and shit

MyMASTODON: yeah, looks like it is a sea of paper all over the place

Amaury: on the streets!

Amaury: SS numbers, accts #s

MyMASTODON: some worry that bearer bonds may have been lost -- they cannot be replaced

Amaury: ok sonny i gotta go-- again its really depressing

Amaury: take care

MyMASTODON: k
try to think ahead and take it easy, if you can>>
