And why are the Bear Beanie Babies so popular and hard to find? Thanks Heidi Littleton, Colorado >>
Hello Heidi,
Father Ty is VERY secretive about everything he does, so nobody really knows why he picks out the ones that will retire.
Beanies are popular because they are relatively inexpensive compared to other toys, and they are very cute and lovable. A lot are hard to find simply because some official adoption centers are greedy and sell the new ones, for example, to those TV shopping clubs and online auctions, and at Beanie shows right out of the shipping boxes. That's why you don't find them in their stores.
Although Father Ty is supposed to have people checking on these grinches, BUT apparently they are doing a VERY poor job of it!!

We went to a little shop and found a whole bunch of the bunnies--Hippity, Hoppity, Floppity, Ears, and Quackers. The lady said she heard they are gonna retire. Should we buy a bunch of them to sell to others? Does it mean they are hard to find, because they are gonna retire? What advise can you give us new collectors? Thanks, Rex. Brittney from Iowa>>
Hello Brittney,
IF they had the bunny Beanies (there were 4 of them so far) and Quackers, they are all already retired!! So, IF they were the "normal" price, do get a couple to use for trading so you can get some Beanie friends that you don't already have. WOW, maybe that store even has a bunch of the other ones that retired on 1 May!! Check their shelves from top to bottom!!
You can check to see which Beanies are retired on the nice Checklist my friend, Sonny, has on his site.

Hello Nicki,
Brownie keeps saying he was the first to retire. Then Punchers comes over and tells me that HE was the first. Take your pick!
They were in the Adoption Centers for a very short time, so, YES, they were sort of difficult to find, but probably not as scarce as Princess or Erin because there were not as many "collectors" then!

Hello Justin,
WOW, you have one of the first Derbys!
IF he is clean and in near perfect shape, even without the hang tag, you should be able to get a trampoline and almost be able to build a sunroom to use it in!!
Perhaps the best place to get a good adoption fee would be the eBay auction. Just be sure that you place the item at a good time for the West coast and give it enough days to finish on a Saturday or Sunday evening.
Good luck. Princess sends you her best early birthday wishes and hopes you enjoy your new trampoline.

Hello James,
WOW, I can't believe that you are not finding even December 1997 (or January 1998, depending on whether you used Greenwich Mean Time for the hour and date!) for less than $300.
Check the trading/selling boards and you will find PILES of December retireds for way less than that amount! Or go to a local flea market.

Anyways, I have a Brownie, well, I think it's a Brownie, and I really need your help to LMK if it is a Brownie. First of all, my Brownie (maybe Cubbie) is tagless! It has a black and white tush tag and the copyright is 1993. It says it was made in China. I'm suppose to be a spiecalist for beanie babies since I have the whole collection, but I will not be a pro. Specialist unless I know if the brown flat bear is Browine. A lot of people at beanie baby shows keep telling me it's a Brownie, but how can I listen to them, they all have different answers. I also have a Pinchers with long wiskers or whatever you call it. All my other Pinchers look way different then this one. This wierd looking one has wiskers two times the size of the other ones. It's also tagless, but I got it that way. Is this beanie baby a different kind of beanie baby? It also has a 1993 black & white tush tag. Theres one more question! My mom just bought a wingless Quackers without a tag but in mint condition for $580.00. Was that a good deal? Okay, I promise to you that this next question is my last question! When I went to pick up the wingless Quackers at the peoples house, it smelled like someone smoked all over it. But the people we bought it from don't smoke! They kept it in a plastic bag since the day the bought it, for $5.00 and boy how lucky they were to get it at that afordable price.Does the plastic bag and how long it was in the plastic bag have to do with its smell, or do you think someone, or something smoked all over it? Patrick, from California >>
Hello Patrick,
I would say that you are a very lucky Chucky! Your Brownie is probably the real thing, and your lobster sounds like the original Punchers!
That wingless Quackers probably came from a non-smokers house, BUT the duck himself probably smoked as a youngster. It goes to show that smoking is not good for your wings!
To get out the smell put a box of baking soda in the bag to absorb the odor, or place one of those laundry softening thingys in the bag for a couple days.

Hello Amanda,
Humphrey says hello.
YES, more of my Beanie pals will be collecting retirement benefits in a very short time. Although Princess knows which ones, she promised Father Ty not to tell.
It is just a rumor that that other company will "buy out" Father Ty. You should never believe even 5% of the rumors that are all over the place, about anything!
If you read some of the other letters in the "Retired Beanies" batch, you will find one of my answers about possible new retirees.

Hello Emily,
Brownie, one of the original nine, is asleep or I would ask him personally.
I know he has a black and white tush tag without his name on it because I can see the tag peeking out of his sleeping bag. It says made in China though.
Since there were Beanie Cloning Labs in Korea in 1994, it is possible that your friend's bear is Brownie.

Hello Andrew,
As you have discovered, when my Beanie pals retire their adoption fees go up. It is the same for any collectible, whether it's a "vintage" car or a frozen piece of a King's wedding cake.
Web told me that the only suggestion that he can give you is that you check to see what retired Beanies you have extras of and trade them for the ones you don't have. Just be sure that you check to see if the person you might trade with is on the good traders lists.

Hi Jessica,
My Beanie friends retire because Father Ty tells them to. When they do retire it means that you can no longer find them in the Beanie Adoption Centers for the normal adoption fees. It's sort of like stamps, coins or anything else that people like to collect. When they are no longer made, then their price goes up. And since fewer Beanies were cloned, their prices rise faster than a lot of other collectibles.

Hi Alexis,
YES, being a Beanie dinosaur is loads of fun. The nursery is always buzzing with one activity after another, and when we get adopted, then the fun really begins. We love to be cuddled and loved to pieces by the kids who adopt us.
You better get your current Beanie friends while they are still not retired because once they do begin to collect their retirement pensions, the adoption fees are always higher.

Hello Jimmy,
WOW, you must be one of those scientists that the government doesn't want to clone things, even though it would be good for man in many ways. '97 Teddy really likes the idea and thinks it could help cure many human medical problems which are "incurable" today..
My best human friend, Sonny, has a large cloning laboratory with dozens of Nobel Prize winning scientists working day and night to figure out the complete genome of the Royal Blue Peanut.
As you know a "genome" is all the DNA of an organism, including its genes (even if they don't wear jeans! <hehe>). There are about 3 billion pairs of chemical bases (A, T, C and G) all repeated billions of times throughout a particular genome. It is like a chemical map that determines what an organism will be, a mouse, a human or a Royal Blue Peanut.
They have encountered several very difficult problems though. It appears that Beanie DNA is totally unlike that of any other other organism known on Earth! They have used several different sequencing methods but always come up with a blank!
Sonny said he will keep you informed of any major breakthroughs.

I usually sit at the computer all day long, except when we are playing or telling stories or the many other things all of us Beanies do throughout the day. The rest of the younger ones go to our Beanie school and learn about all kinds of things so they can someday do what I am doing, and be able to interact with their human friends.

Why is this so?? Thanks for your time....your the best beanie in the nursury!! Melissa :-) >>
Hello Melissa,
Thanks for telling me I am your favorite! Peace tells me that is OK though, he is not jealous. A lot of kids like him the most.
We Beanies have all been trying to figure out if there were 3 or 4 retirements in 1997. The announcement was so close to midnight Eastern Standard Time on New Years Eve that we wonder which time zone should be used to determine the exact date. Princess says we should use Greenwich Mean Time that runs through England. That would make it on 1 January 1998. And Peking insists that we use the East side of the International Date Line which would have been on 31 December 1997.
Father Ty likes to bring out new beanies as many times as he can so that you kids can have new Beanie friends to play with. He already had to build a couple new additions to the nursery wing for all of us to have our own rooms, and hang our posters and all. It is better for us when we study and do our homework too. But you know that already, I guess. Do you have your own room?
You should always try to adopt us BEFORE we retire. Then you will be surprised and happy for us when we start collecting our pensions as retired Beanies!

Hello,
Peace tells me that Beanies first appeared in a lot of adoption centers in 1994. WOW, that was only 4 years ago!
He also said that some retired a month or so AFTER they first began getting adopted by a lot of kids. Maple "Pride" keeps butting in to tell you that he was retired after only about 3000 adoptions! WOW, he must be very rare!

Hi Jacob,
Beanie Babies are not like all the other animals that live on the Earth. They are always cute, never get old or sick, and never grow any bigger than when they were born! All of them do like to play a lot though, just like human children.
Teenie Speedy is telling me that he is not a "midget"! Just like your cousin is not a midget compared to his father! Just because your cousin eats a lot and grows taller and all, we Beanies don't eat that much so we never get any bigger. Tell your cousin that he hurt Teenie Speedy's feelings!

Abu,
Ty really loves each and every one of his Beanie friends and knows that each one gets sort of "old" after a certain amount of time. Only he knows exactly when that is.
An example would be Snowball, the snowman-- he is watching me write this to you and he is happy now that he is on Medicare in case he gets the flu or water "under the hat" or something. Ty retired him because he knows that this winter will be a little warmer in some places and Snowball would turn into a puddle if he did not retire fast! Imagine, it was 65 degrees here in New Jersey today! He usually plays in the freezer with Chilly and Waddle if he is not out playing with the other Beanies when it gets real cold outside.

Kirsten >>
Hi Kirsten,
GEEZE, are you studying to be the next Einstein? What % of your question should I answer in the first % of my answer??
My Beanie calculator does not do percentages-- at least I don't think it does. Princess is telling me that I should give you the numbers you need and that I should let you do the calculations. So here they are, in the form of a % question :
A) if 134 Beanies have been made, not counting all the different changes (like in Tank with and without shell or the new horn on Mystic or name changes like Tabasco to Snort), and
B) if 54 of my Beanie friends are now collecting retirement benefits,
QUESTION : what % of the Beanies are retired?
How many Beanies have left the nursery for new homes? You know, my friend Web is the one in charge of that department. That's why he has so many hands to keep track of those leaving and to type the numbers really fast on the computer. I bet you didn't know that they named the INTERNET after him for all his hard work? That's why it's called The WEB!
Well, don't tell anybody about this (PROMISE!) or Ty would be VERY upset : on New Years Eve (you remember, retirement night) after Web had the numbers all up-to-date, along came Nip who was chasing Trap all over the place, playing hide-and-go-seek. His paw hit the DELETE key. Guess what? All those years of work were gone! And Web didn't make up any backup file! Web's New Years resolution was not to even think about how many Beanies there are any more. Why should he do all the work?
Now to the last % of your questions : I thought that I would only give one FREE Beanie out at the end of each month. That means that only one winning question will get one of my friends at the end of January. Then another Beanie will be awarded on the last day of the other 11 months in this year. BUT the questions are so good, maybe I can select a second winner each month. You should see how excited all my Beanies friends are . They all want to be the winner's new pal ! We shall see!

Hi Kellie,
Kewl, you like Radar too! He and his younger cousin, Batty, kept us all company in that cave.
I don't really know what you want to know about him? You must already know how bats find their way in the dark-- by sending out sound waves that bounce off of what is in front of them and come back to their very sensitive sense of hearing. They find flying food, like insects, the same way. Some of his relatives eat only fruit.
Did you build a bat house at your home so that his friends can have a place to live? They are easy to build because bats are not very fussy about having a lot of rooms with furniture and stuff like dolls do. And they fly around at night and eat all those pesky bugs that bother you during the summer.
Batty and Radar are always flying aroung
Sonny when he is studying,
trying to learn something too. Some of my Beanie pals even got scholarships to study at famous Colleges. That's because they always studied a lot in grade school and high school, did all their homework and even extra projects. That's why they got pretty good grades. In their spare time they help the younger Beanies with their school work. Most of them can speak at least 2 languages. Have you studied a foreign language yet?

Stephanie, hi again,
The first retirement date was in the same year that my first Beanie friends arrived at the nursery (remember Brownie?). That was way back in 1994, even though some old tags say 1993 on them. 1993 is when they started their long journey over land and sea to their new home in Illinois.
Let me look around and see.
There's Lizzy, Garcia, Peace, Doodle & his brother Strut, Claude (he is waving his pinchers to you to say hello), Coral, Flutter, Sting, and my dinosaur pals, Steg, Bronty and of, course, last but not least, me.

Hi,
Well, Brownie was one of my original 9 beanie pals-- seems like only yesterday! He is Cubbie's twin, only he was born a couple hours earlier. So to be able to tell them apart Mamma Bear, who needs glasses, named each one with a different name so she could figure out which was which. They are both sitting here with me watching me answer your question and even with my glasses on I can't tell the difference!
