REX'S EMAIL

about

THE KING OF THE DINOSAURS

Here are some of the emails asking things about me, REX, that I received since January. Remember that I don't pick a winner until the end of each month. Thanks for all your really great letters. I never knew I had so many friends!

Make sure that you read my answers so you don't ask the same question again.

Please sign your letter with your first name and include the State you live in.

In a message dated 30/6/98 09:12:36, you wrote: <<Hi Rex! My name is Daisy. I'm 8 years old and live near Cambridge in England. I have twelve beanies, but I don't have one of your clones yet! My mum and I (she collects pillow pals) go looking every chance we can. My question is, are you cold blooded or warm blooded? And if you're cold blooded, do you FEEL cold? I think you must be warm blooded because you look very cuddly. And another question - can I give you a *HUG* please? :o) Love and hugs Daisy Cambridge England The Universe This dimension>>

Hello Daisy,

Wow, all the way from Cambridge!! My human friend, Sonny, studied some walrus fossils at the University fossil department many years ago.

I am actually Beanie blooded. All of my Beanie pals are unique forms of life from the same "Universe" as you, but from a slightly different "dimension"

Beanie blooded creatures are technically neither warm nor cold "blooded". We seem to attune our physiological reality to that of those who adopt us.

When you see an Glory pictured on one of the auction sites at an opening bid of $160, that Beanie is cryogenically frozen! On a flea market table with an adoption fee of $80, he is still ice cold!

When a warm-hearted owner of one of the few Official Beanie Adoption Agencies lovingly places one on a shelf with all the others in the shipment, and a child comes in and falls in love with him, then that particular Glory is gloriously warm and lovable!!

Everything in the Universe is "relative"!!

Much Love and an enormous warm Beanie HUG to you too.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Bye for now. Bobby (age 8) from Saskatchewan, Canada P. S. I live in Colonsay, Saskatchewan (SK) in Canada. You are invited to my birthday party on Nov. 25. I hope I'm inviting you far enough in advance so that you can plan to come.>>

Hello Bobby,

All of my different dinosaur relatives had different numbers of teeth. My ancestor had about 50 and some of them were about 12 inches long including the root!

YES, my fossil brothers were a bit taller than your dad. Some were over15 feet tall !!

Thanks for the invite to your birthday party. That would be kewl!! I have never been to any place in Canada except Montreal.

In a message dated 12/3/98 19:00:56, you wrote: <<Dear REX, Are Bronty & Steg your real "brothers"? Because some people think that you aren't. Toodles, Anna>>

Hello Anna,

YES, Bronty and Steg and I are real Beanie "brothers", but not in the actual scientific sense.

Scientists classify us into different kinds of dinosaurs, BUT we are related in that we are all from the "Dinosaur" group of animals. We are not as close as you humans are though.

Every human being alive on Earth today, whether from the United States or China or any other country are all the same "species", and are closely related to each other biologically. I think that is kewl!

In a message dated 22/2/98 02:02:16, you wrote: <<DEAR REX, WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE BEANIE BAIE THATS RETIRED? >>

Hi,

You forgot to include your name and the State you live in.

My favorite retired Beanie pal is Bronty because he helps me with my emails and all. Peace, Princess and Steggy also help me a lot in whatever I do.

In a message dated 14/2/98 02:33:11, you wrote: <<Dear Rex, My name is Chelsea. I live in Columbus, Nebraska. Do you like eat plants and meat, or do you just eat meat? Love, Cheslea >>

Hello Cheslea,

My ancestors really liked to eat lots of fresh meat. You can tell because they had these really long, sharp teeth. They also snacked on some plants every now and then too because they knew that they needed some of the plant vitamins to keep them healthy, just like humans need salads and stuff.

I am a little different, though. I guess my favorite food is pizza! Have you ever tried mashed potatoes with half normal potatoes and half those yummy sweet potatoes all mashed together? Then you add spinach that was cooked and fried with bacon, mix it all up and you have a really great side dish for any meal. It is something that my friend, Sonny, makes for us every now and then. And a lot of my Beanie friends like it too.

In a message dated 7/2/98 17:51:29, you wrote: <<Rex, why did you want to start Ask Rex? What inspired you? >>

Hi,

As I mentioned in an answer before yours, we dinosaurs are a lot of fun as friends. We have been around for a long time and have seen many things in a lot of places. Just like by pal, Peace, we really enjoy doing nice things for people and helping them out whenever we can. Don't you like it when people are nice to you?

I thought it would be kewl to answer some of the questions that you kids have about science, which is my favorite subject, and, of course, about us Beanies. That's how you, and even my younger Beanie pals, learn new and interesting things, by asking questions. That makes you just like the scientists! They always ask all kinds of questions and try to find the answers. And sometimes they even discover new things that way!

Bronty was the one who suggested picking the best question and awarding a Beanie pal as a prize. You should see how all the Beanies in the nursery get excited when it comes prize time. They all want to travel to meet new friends!

In a message dated 2/2/98 19:13:30, you wrote: <<DEAR REX, THE HUMAN BODY HAS 206 BONES, HOW MANY DO YOU HAVE.>>

Hi,

I doubt that you ever counted every single bone in your body, and the number 206 is an "average". Some people have more and some have even less.

Peace once tried to count my bones but he tickled me so much he had to stop.

Thanks REX! >>

Hello Christopher,

You should thank your Dad for helping you write to me. That's the way all Dads should be, but a lot of times they just don't have the time because they work so much.

My ancestors, who weighed sometimes over 6 tons, lived during the Late Cretaceous Period (you can see where that is located on the Geological Time Scale) from about 80 to 65 millions years ago. Do you know how many zeros that has?

Maybe your classmates might want to enter my next contest which begins on 1 February.

Hello Lindsay & Andrew,

I thought we were supposed to ask one question each month?? Most of them I already answered. Smoochy says for you to check out all of the questions and answers on the lists.

I appeared in the nursery in 1995 and retired in 1996. That gives me a lot of time to answer all the emails I get from kids all over the world.

I love you both too!

You should check out some of the web sites that have ads for my Beanie pals and sometimes even I am listed for trade or a foster home

In a message dated 16/1/98 17:08:07, you wrote: <<Dear Rex, When you were little, what was your favorite food to eat and what was your least favorite food to eat? Tim >>

Hi Tim,

I am still sort of "little" compared to my ancestors! I have always liked pizza with sausage, and root beer. I just thought of a kewl name for a new Beanie : Root Bear, the light brown bear!

I never really liked artichokes. They are really yukky, except for the center part, and you have to throw most of the leaves away. I don't like to waste things so much.

Your listener' Jason>>

Hello Jason,

YES, I am one of the kewl tie-dyed Beanies, and so are Steggy and Bronty. Who left me out? All my Beanie friends know that I am tie-dyed.

That sounds like a lot of money to adopt me. There are plenty of my brothers and sisters out there in a lot of kids collections. Guess they are all saving them nice and minty fresh for when they are older and they can give them to their children.

Why don't you check around on the Beanie trading places on the internet and see if somebody will trade you a REX for a bunch of your extra Beanies? Beanies love to be traded because they get to meet a lot of new kids that way.

P.S.How did Dr. Osborn find you?Did he dig you up or did you float to land from the sea. Your Listener, Jason >>

Hi Jason,

Dr. Osborne didn't find the bones of my ancestors, he was the one who named me! If you read Lauren's letter, under yours, you will see that Mr.Brown actually discovered the bones. And NO, he wasn't afraid at all, as a matter of fact he went out looking for bones so he could maybe find some new kind of dinosaur! And he did!!

Yes, he actually dug up the bones. Bones is jumping up and down thinking that I am writing about him! They were too heavy to float because they were fossilized and turned into hard mineral.

In a message dated 6/1/98 01:49:13, you wrote: <Rex, Are you a mommy or a daddy rex? Thanks, Tyler>>

Tyler,

I am a boy REX. My REX family has a lot of brother and sister REXs too. With Beanies it is VERY difficult to tell the boys from the girls, kinda like a lot of turtles, fish and even parakeets.

Beanie Babies are all too young to be Beanie daddys and mommys. Sort of like Barbie, I guess!

Hi Lauren,

WOW, I thought I wrote that you could only ask ONE question at a time. The prize at the end of the month is for the ONE best question, not for a whole bunch at once.

Let me see, which one should I answer?

If my memory serves me right, I sort of remember that Barnum Brown first discovered some backbones and the lower jaw of one of my cousin's in 1900 In Wyoming (now at a museum In London, home of my pal Britannia). Then, again in 1902 and 1905 he unearthed a better set of bones in Montana (now seen in a museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), but it wasn't until 1988 that scientists dug up an almost complete skeleton in Montana.

Princess is still amazed that I can remember so much stuff!

<Sniff> Thanks for telling me I was the #1 dinosaur in all the surveys. I didn't know that! Steggy and Bronty are jumping all over the place now that they know they are numbers 2 & 3 !

I wonder if you know who was the first to use the term "DINOSAUR"??

REX, the # 1 !!

In a message dated 4/1/98 23:23:57, you wrote: << Dear Rex, If you were alive today would you hurt people? If no, do you resent movies like THE LOST WORLD and JURASSIC PARK were T-Rexes kill people? Thanks, David >>

David,

I AM alive today writing this reply to your questions! You see, this is what going to school and learning new things allows you to do-- even if I am a dinosaur! I could never get to be President, but maybe you could!

And NO, I do not hurt or eat people like they show in some movies. Did you see my pic on the fieldtrip with Bronty and Peace. Do I look wild and nasty?

I do not really "resent" the movies you mentioned because that is what Hollywood always does, makes things more scarey and all thinking that people like that kind of stuff. When Sonny took a bunch of us to see them, we were laughing all through the movies! People were throwing popcorn and stuff at us so we would stop making so much noise!

Guess what we did with all the popcorn? Peace ate so much, he couldn't even move when it was over! He loves popcorn.

In a message dated 4/1/98 22:06:45, you wrote: <<Dawn . Hi my name is Dawn and I want t ask you how much food do consume in one Day? How much do you wiegh? Can you get sick if you are to overweight. Where there realy cave people when you were alive. >>

Dear Dawn,

I do not eat a real lot in one day. Instead of the usual breakfast, lunch and dinner I munch stuff all day long.

Like around dinner I had 2 tofuburgers with 4 fried bananas, 2 large sodas and about 5 oatmeal raison cookies. A couple hours later I had six chocolate covered broccoli sprouts, 3 dried apricot slices and 2 pots of green tea that helps keep me awake when I am up late to answer some more emails. Right now I am munching away some of the holiday cookies that my human friends gave me for Christmas

I now MASS (my word for "weigh") exactly 121.10 g (the "g" is for grams, which in Europe is also spelled grammes). The gram is a measurement of mass, or "weight", as you usually call it. One ounce (= oz) is equal to 28.3495 g. How many ounces do I weigh? I already told you how many grams, so all you do is have to change the grams to ounces. Can you do it? If you get stuck, ask your science teacher for help.

IF I would eat too much, I might get a tummy ache, BUT I never really do! Do you think I weigh too much? I think I am just the right weight and size for a Beanie Baby.

Since I have been living for so many million years, YES, I have seen cave men come and go. Have you seen the beautiful paintings they left in their caves, on the walls and ceilings? Even my friend Marty, the Mastodon posed for a couple of them.

Thanks for your questions, and try to figure out that problem I gave you.

In a message dated 6/1/98 02:03:54, you wrote: << it Would Be about 4.271680277 Is that right!! Dawn>>

Hi again Dawn,

SORRY, your answer of 4.271680277 is NOT correct. Did you mean that many apples, or squirrels, or maybe Beanies?? A number without the name of whatever it is you are talking about (some teachers call these words or abbreviations, UNITS) is just a long number.

Thanks for trying though! That is how we all learn things.

Do you like Bronty and Steg, and don't forget all of the other beanies!!! Really, do you like them all? If you have some pros and cons, I promise that I will never tell that certain beanie what you said about it. Who's your fav beanie? It doesn't have to be my fav beanie, which is Flash. And please, don't say your fav beanie is you!!! =) Well, I guess that's it. Happy New Year, Rex!!! Anna >>

Anna,

Actually my friend Pablo P. picked out my colors for me. I actually wanted something darker, and Ty wanted something lighter, but Pablo took his brush and just went splash and there it was! Glad you like them.

I really love all of my Beanie friends, especially the ones who help me all the time, like Bronty, Peace and Steggy. Not one of them has ever been nasty or mean.

I have also mentioned Batty a lot-- he is sort of special because we got to know each other all those millions of years when my Dad, Big REX, took a whole bunch of us to that cave he lives in. Batty showed us how he gets around in the dark, sort of like using radar signals. He taught us all how to do it!! That study is called ECHOLOCATION-- see if you can find stuff about it by doing a Web Search. Would you believe that I just got over 800 references back! WOW!!

Tammy,

YES, there are a whole bunch of my REX cousins in the nursery. I am not really the "chosen one", rather I am the oldest and so far the only one of the dinosaurs who can work with the computer..

Steggy and Bronty are looking over my shoulder and are excited that you like them also-- they are waving hello to you!

(BOO-HOO) And, who was the most popular dinosaur when you were around? By the way, Your beanie rules, I wish I had him but don't have that much money. >>

Hi,

WOW, I really did not think that so many kids like me so much. It makes me blush from head to tail! Tell your cousin that I said hello to him to. I would have said it to his and your names but you did not include them. Whenever you write to somebody you should always put at least your first name-- you knew mine already. People-- and dinosaurs-- like it when you know them by name. I bet you know all your friends names and they know yours. You have to go to a museum and check out the names of all my relatives. They would have liked you, not like some of those nasty dinosaurs in those movies! We didn't have movies or any of that neat stuff when I was young.

I didn't die, as you can see! I am right here writing to you. Some of my cousins did though. Some just got old, others found it too cold and shivered to death. You are lucky that you can get dressed up nice and warm when you go outside during the winter. Does it get cold where you are? I live in a nice warm house, and a lot of times I sit with Sonny's kittens on top of the monitor where it is warm when the computer is running-- like 20 hours a day!

All my dinosaur friends used to tell me that I was the most popular. I always told them jokes, and we played a lot together. And I always made up stories to tell them. They liked that a lot. I always helped them out when they needed it, mostly without them asking me to. And my nest was the cleanest of them all. I always kept my toys in one corner, and my bed was always nice and neat.

Rachel,

Wow, I can't count all my bones and I have really tried. Have you tried to count all the bones you have in your body?? Peace said he would try to figure it out for you, but it tickled so much that I could not stop laughing! Sorry.

Bronty is sitting on the right of the keyboard and Steggy (that's what I call him) is on top of the monitor where it is warmer. They both say "hello". When Peace is out playing, Bronty always helps me with my emails.

In a message dated 31/12/97 23:30:36, you wrote: <<I wanted to know why you were so colurful! Did You eat a lot of berries and get splashed with color? Thank you!-Kelly>>

Kelly,

Yes, I guess I am sort of colorful. I usually only ate berries and other greens as a snack. I ate meat mostly, that's why my teeth are so long and sharp.

If I were lighter colored I would not absorb as much of the Sun's heat as I do being a bit darker. I always like to play in the Sun and warm myself at the same time.

And I love getting splashed with water-- Peanut is always doing that to me!

In a message dated 2/1/98 03:53:44, you wrote: <<IF YOU ARE THE KING OF DINOSAURS , WHO IS THE QUEEN?? AND IS HER NAME REXANA??>>

Matt,

That is a great question! No, no scientist has yet named a dinosaur queen, and I don't think that "Rexana" is a Greek or Latin word. You could check that out on the net or at your local library in a good Latin or Greek dictionary. Actually the word "Queen" comes from the old English word "cwen", in use before the year 1150. It would be something like "Emperere" in Latin.

I would pick my ole friend Bronty as a queen because she is so nice and quiet and lovable. All the vegetarians I have ever met are like that. She is always here watching me answer my emails.

In a message dated 2/1/98 02:48:57, you wrote: <<I was wondering, how long it took Ty Warner to find you in the cave? >>

Katy,

Hi again. Well, it was like this. We all heard him scratching above us, so we were all hoping that somebody would be strong enough to break all the way through. And he was.

After our eyes adjusted to the bright sunlight for the first time in millions of years, we saw his outline crawling through the entrance. He was a little surprised to find all my friends and me there, but we were already jumping all over and hugging him asking what year it was. He immediately liked us and invited us in for a snack. I never had ice cream and coco before! Yummy!!

He prepared a couple rooms for us and we have been there ever since.
