My PIC

Hi, my full name is Tyrannosaurus rex.The palaeontologist (a guy who studies fossils) who named me way back in 1905 was Dr. Henry Fairfield Osborn.

My name comes from some old Greek and Latin words. Scientists like to use Greek and Latin to name plants and animals because the old words are supposed to tell you certain things about the organism. They look strange BUT they actually mean important things. Tyrannos means "the absolute ruler" and sauros translates as "lizard". You can all see that I am sort of like a big lizard , but I am not as terrible as many people say. Some of my ancestors were kinda nasty, but that was a long time ago! And lastly, REX means "king", so I am really the King of the Dinosaurs!!

I am very friendly and love to play with my other Beanie and human friends. Now I live in New Jersey with Sonny and his nice cats. I usually play inside where it is warm during the winter because I can't stand the cold too much, but I do go out and have snowball fights a couple times a year with Steg and Bronty, my pals from way back!

I have lived in many places of North America in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota; and I even went to visit our neighbors in Canada. Some of my cousins lived in Asia and other far away places. This was during what the fossil hunters call the Upper Cretaceous Period [go to the Geological Time Scale to see how old I really am ! Hey, I look great for my age, don't I? And, believe it or not, I never had a face or tail lift! ]. My friends at TY could not fit all those numbers (67,000,000 B.C.-- I can't even say a number that high! Can you?) on the birthday space of my hang tag, so they left it blank.

They did not give me a poem either, but here is one that I made up. They never even asked me for mine!

My Poem

He is big and strong and likes to play
But all his friends would run away
Until they found that REX has the cools
Now they hang out, play games and say
REX RULES !!

Did you like my verse? I made it up all by myself, millions of years ago while my dinosaur relatives and I were watching some comets whiz by! {comets are sort of like meteorites, but they don't usually land on Earth. Click Meteorites to see what Tectites and Siderites are] WOW, were they bright, and they made lots of noise and the ground shook real hard!

My Dad, Big Rex, was very upset so he took the whole family and some really close friends from their nests to what is now called Illinois, to a deep cave where it was warmer than outside. A very long time later Mr.Ty Warner was digging up some soil for his potted geraniums when he found the cave entrance and we could all see daylight again! Were we all very glad to meet him! So he invited us in and I suggested that he should make some cute little toys filled with jumping beans that I called Authentic Palaeontologically Accurate Bean-filled Jumping Baby Dinosaurs. He didn't like that name, so he changed it and made it shorter and easier to say. You already know the rest.

Some of the letters I received, and my answers, are located in

Do you want to see me at work answering all my friends' email? Steggy took a kewl pic of me at Sonny's computer, checking out your questions. Peace and Princess were there too, as usual, to help me out if I got stuck with something. Click below for pic.
