<< December 29, 1999 Chers Amis et Colleagues du Filguking 20th Century:

Congratulations upon not having achieved your eightieth birthday, and many happy returns of the day!

Where am I? Naturally, where would I be, the Global American, but witnessing a 400- kilometer oil slick crawling upon French shores and caught in Europe's worst storm of the century. We even had a blackout during the night, ho-hum token remembrance of the New York blackouts... And our few bits of flying tile, toppling chimneys, crashing shutters are as nothing compared to a good Illinois tornado. And Exxon has shown Total that Americans can pollute bigger and better. But they want to call it a tornado around here.

That's all right with me. They are a singularly gracious people living in a remarkably harmonious and complete antique setting, with an avantgarde flourish in the Centre Nationale de la Bande Dessinée et de l'Image.

Ami and I have been piecing together the furnishings for a grand old apartment from second-hand and first-hand emporia and awaiting the stuff stored for years from our house in Saignon. It is easy enough to do if you have set up as many a room, apartment, home, tent, abri, shack, barrack, school, castle, and cabin as have I. And Ami is also in pretty good training for this. So we have time for cuisine, amour, sharpening our electronic pencils, and walkabout.

We are not abandoning any place, but just adding one. It is an alternative for the proposition I had in mind for celebrating the birthday and millennium and all of that - a big party in Naxos. When I see what has happened to all the planes and trains in Europe that might have been carrying cherished friends, I am glad. Furthermore, when I got to imagining who might not get along with whom, I began to worry whether Naxos was a large enough Island to hold everybody.

"What great lessons have you learned from your lengthy existence?"

Next question.

"What are your plans for the future?"

Not to buy any green bananas.

"Do you hold any hope for the world?"

Nope.

"What do you propose then?"

One World indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

"That sounds most hopeful. But hopeless."

There you have it.

"What?"

Man's fate.

"How so?"

Sisyphus spent more time near the top of the mountain than near the bottom.

"Can I do anything for you, old boy?"

Yes, give me money.

Come visit. Even if psychically. Here, Naxos, Princeton, somewhere.

As ever, (Signed by Alfred de Grazia in the presence of Ami and the Holy Ghost.) Angoulême, France >>

<< Hi Sonny, I was reading your Y.E.S., like I do whenever I have the chance,... Just wanted to say I am sorry to hear of your loss! Poor kitty! (Poor SONNY! That story made ME cry, too!) I am, however, glad that you found a very caring and ethical veterinarian who not only treated you with respect, but didn't charge you! That is a rare find in people these days, eh? I'd keep track of him... he sounds like one of the great ones! I have worked with a LOT of vets, and I don't know of ANY who wouldn't at least have charged you for a few piddly things, at least. Better keep track of him! And if he moves to Indianapolis, be sure to alert me so I can find him! LOL!

I think Bernar was absolutely horrible during the whole event, and I don't mind saying so. Even tho I never met the guy. :)

In essence, what I'm trying to say is, I hope you don't feel somehow "at fault" for the situation... I sensed that maybe you did, just a bit... You are an excellent "Dad" to those kitties, and you do a beautiful job with them. That's quite evident in the way THEY treat YOU! LOL! If I lived closer to you, I would have adopted one of your kittens long ago when I was in the market for a new pussy <VEG> Just thought you might appreciate a virtual hug... {{{ more power to ya! }}} Hang in there. Lisa :) >>

<< Hi, Like your website. My daughter's favorite in her collection is Steg. We bought him in Nov./Dec. 1995 at a Christmas Craft Bazaar at our church. They were selling the beanies in cute homemade sleeping bags (with built in pillow). We bought three of them. I don't remember who the other two were, but my daughter remembers. Steg is intact (all tags) and now living in a display box near some of his other friends (Peace, etc.). He's not for sale. Keep up the good work, Linda in Brevard County, FL >>

<<Hello, I had your web site bookmarked some time ago, however I took a break from cyberspace earlier this year and today visited your site as if for the first time. I was immediately pleased with your choice in background design and your use of color. I had originally bookmarked the site for Ty Beanie information.

Now your site will be moved to the top of the list because you are also a cat person. I have 8 cats at present and 1 dog, all of whom were SPCA abandoned, lost, injured and/or homeless. My first "proper" kitty was a Siamese who lived to be 17. Two weeks after Sam died, I brought Charlie home from the SPCA and he is now my oldest at 19. And it goes on from there.

I was very entertained by your comments related to Ty Warner and his business style. I enjoy interacting with intelligent, creative people who are not hesitate to speak their mind. I am interested to know if your comments related to your adoption service in 2000 meant that you would not be collecting/trading/etc. Ty "new" beanies. I have been a collector since 1994 and became burned out when so many tried to make a killing at the expense of others. That is one reason I stopped trading on the web for a while, but Ty has successfully put me back in the market with his announcement that all will be retired 12/99. I don't have all the original ones like Trap and the Dino trio and probably won't spend the money to own a dark blue Peanut, but I will be looking for reasonable deals on those I'm missing. So, I'll be a frequent visitor to your site during the next few months.

Hope this message finds you well. I look forward to your reply. Sincerely, Joan Wencel>>

<<Hi Sonny,

I stayed up late nights to read your journal, felt like I was there sometimes and wished I could have brought you dinner. Never never have known anyone who maintained their weight going through that ordeal. I sure as hell never knew a man living alone to find the inner strength that you maintained. I have many health problems and have always thought if I had cancer I would just go to bed and wait. After the journal I thought what a wimp I am. I am sure you gave lots of people a lot to think about and change in their wimpy character. Thanks! Annette>>

It really made me sad to miss it - I had planned to come along with several of my local friends who went. I live in VA not too far from Baltimore. But all you who were there are very glad that I didn't come - I came down with the flu on Friday and feel miserable. Reading all the reports has made me feel better - and also sadder! - but maybe another time. I'm really glad the whole thing was a success. Hope those others who went and haven't written yet will do so. And I'm thankful that all have gotten home safely. Ruth >>

You didn't show that one as rare, so that's interesting, at least to me. Gosh you're terrific at setting up web pages. When I retire......... gosh I want to learn how to do that.
